Unemployment in Australia, as of September 2023 is 3.6%. The labour force is strong and finding workers is proving difficult for many businesses. A war for top talent is intensifying, while big business can afford to doll our high salaries to capture attention, small businesses need their own tools of standing as an employer of choice.

One overlooked yet powerful tool in recruitment is your website. Small businesses can use their website, including a dedicated careers page, to put their culture, values and mission on display to attract the right staff.

Since Covid-19, many people are choosing to return to working for small businesses (or starting their own business) because of the greater flexibility, connection to work and team, and sense of purpose that small business offers.

Here are some tips to use your website to attract top staff:

Create a Careers page

A careers page is more than just a list of current or potential job openings; it showcases what makes your company an exceptional place to work. Use this space to highlight:

  • Current job openings: List available positions, but go beyond the basics. Include insights into what each role entails and the impact it will have on your company and its mission.

  • Employee testimonials: Let your current team members share what they love about working for your business.

  • Growth and development opportunities: People want to work for businesses that are invested in their grow. Showcase what available training programs, mentorship, or career progression paths you provide.

TIP: It doesn't hurt to be actively advertising for future roles and receiving an influx of potential candidates, even if you're not ready to hire immediately.

Create an About Us page

An About Us page is great for SEO, but it's also great for demonstrating your values, mission and culture to customers and potential employees. So don't create a generic about page, put some effort into it to make it unique and stand out.

Your website about us page should include:

  • Your mission statement. What is the mission of your business in one or two sentences? Make it big, clear and memorable.

  • Your values in action. Don't just list your values, show them in action with photos, videos or testimonials.

  • Your culture. This section can include information about team-building activities, community involvement, or diversity.

  • Your location. What does your office look and feel like? Do you support work from home? Make that really clear.

The Benefits of Transparency

In todays economy and workplaces, transparency is key. People respect companies that are upfront about what they offer and what they expect in return. Your website is an opportunity to display transparency. Whether it's outlining employee perks, talking about your hiring process or sharing behind the scenes content, your website is a window into the heart and soul of your business.

It's not just about finding talented people, it's about finding people who connect with and believe in your mission and want to grow with you. If you don't communicate the mission, values and purpose of your business - how will those employees know and find you? And how will you find them? An job ad won't cut it. Your website has to do the talking.
